ASTEP was conceived by Mary-Mitchell Campbell, a musical director on Broadway and a group of Julliard students who were looking for an effective way to give back to the community using the most significant tool they had—their art.

Collaboratively, they decided on a goal: to demonstrate how art has the power to inspire individuals to reach their potential and strengthen communities. The very first ASTEP initiative was built in Homestead, Florida in 2003 and became the prototype program upon which each ASTEP experience is formulated. ASTEP received its 501c3 status in June of 2006.
