ASTEP Documentary: South Africa 2007 now available!

In July 2007, ASTEP, in collaboration with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (www.broadwaycares.org) and Ubuntu Education Fund (www.ubuntufund.org), was fortunate enough to be able to share the amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience of our 2007 Johannesburg Arts Awareness Field Trip.

Even more fortunate was that Broadway performer David Turner donated his time, energy and money to travel to South Africa and document this 3-day bus tour.

Lovingly and beautifully filmed and edited this 20 minute two-part documentary follows the ASTEP volunteers and children from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg to see performances of RENT and The Lion King and visit the Apartheid Museum.

David Turner is currently performing in Sunday in the Park with George (alongside ASTEP board member Anne Nathan). His Broadway credits include In My Life (Music Box), Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love (Lyceum) and Terrence McNally's farce The Ritz. Off-Broadway his credits include Shakespeare (Abridged), The Butter and Egg Man, The Last Sunday in June and Gutenberg! The Musical!. He received a Helen Hayes Award nomination for his performance as Sir Robin in Monty Python's Spamalot (dir. Mike Nichols) and BMI's Jerry Harrington Award for outstanding creative achievement as a songwriter.

In addition to having shot and edited the ASTEP documentary, David is the director/writer of a feature-length film called The Debut, which starred some of his friends from Spamalot. Also, his popular satirical essay about life at The Ritz is still available here.

ASTEP would like to extend a huge thank you to David for creating this special documentary and giving us the gift of a record of this experience that will last a lifetime. ASTEP whole heartedly appreciates the time, effort and love that went into producing such a wonderful representation of what we do, and providing us with something we can now share with the world!
